The 2011 winner was Mr. Tom Collins.  He was selected unanimously from an impressive group of applicants by the judges of the  North East Open. Tom is a student and assistant instructor and Pil Sung Martial Arts in Albany.  He is currently 19 years old and just graduated from high school this year. He started competing in tournaments in 2008 and has grown significantly in the past 3 years. He is now a world class competitor in
Traditional and Extreme forms and Extreme weapons.

Tom’s goal is to compete in the NASKA circuit year round.

In July 2011 Tom  was eager to attend the  US Open, but due to a lack of resources, was unable to travel to the tournament in Florida.  Because of your generosity Tom has already competed in several tournaments this year.

On August 5th & 6th Tom travelled to Washington DC for the US Capitol Classics NASKA tournament. He competed Friday Night on Stage in Extreme Weapons and Extreme Forms alongside NASKA World Champion Marc Canonizado.  He placed 2nd in Extreme Weapons to Marc’s 1st place win, and placed 4th in Extreme Forms. Saturday, Tom competed in the USBA/WBA Breaking portion of the event and Broke 8 concrete patio blocks taking 2nd in the Men’s 18 and older Power Concrete Foot Division.

On September 16th & 17th Tom was in NYC at the Jacob Javits Center for the Twin Towers Classic NASKA Tournament. Friday Night he competed with World Champion Matt Emig in Extreme Forms and Extreme Weapons . He took 3rd Place in extreme weapons and 5th in Extreme Forms. Saturday Tom helped coach the younger team members in the second day of competition.

We want to  give you another update on the 2011 winner, Mr. Tom Collins.  Since our last update, Tom has been drafted on to Team 100% Performance, one of the top ranked teams in the country on the NASKA Circuit for Sport Karate. Thanks to your help, Tom was able to travel to Chicago, IL in January for the AKA Grand Nationals and compete in Extreme Forms and Extreme Weapons divisions.

In March Tom traveled to Philadelphia, PA for the Amerikick Grand Nationals.  There Tom expanded on his arsenal of events and competed for the first time in Creative Forms in addition to his Extreme Divisions.

It was in Rhode Island this April where Tom saw his greatest success, placing 3rd in the Creative Forms Men’s Black Belt division, having  tied for 2nd, at the Ocean State Grand Nationals. Placing this high at a NASKA event is a huge accomplishment for Tom, having beaten many veteran World Champions!

A Note from Tom:

I would like to thank all of you who have contributed to the Scholarship that I was awarded. It has helped me grow as a martial arts competitor and it has given me amazing opportunities. It has taken me as far as Washington D.C  and Chicago to compete in national

competitions .  This scholarship has helped me a  great amount. Thank you very much

Tom Collins
